How a Challenger Mindset Took Neil to Math Olympiad Gold

Neil is the quiet, thoughtful kind of fifth grader who lets his work speak for him. Put a math problem in front of him, though, and a competitor shows up.

That competitive streak recently took Neil, a Grade 5 student in Pennsylvania's gifted program, to a Gold Medal in the Math Olympiad, first place in his school, and the top 20% of scorers in his state. Week after week of online math tutoring with Cuemath gave that drive somewhere to grow, with his tutor, Satabdi Khanna, right beside him.

Meet Neil

  • Grade: 5
  • Country: US (Pennsylvania)
  • Tutor: Satabdi Khanna
  • Program: School Gifted Program
  • Math Olympiad (MOEMS): Gold Medal, 1st in School, Top 20% in Pennsylvania

Plenty of children are good at math early. The harder question for the parent of a gifted child is what comes next: whether that early ability deepens into something real, or quietly levels off because nothing keeps stretching it. Neil had the talent. What he needed was a way to keep aiming higher than he had the day before.

Satabdi Khanna gave him exactly that. Instead of simply moving on to the next topic, she and Neil set a goal each class for the number of "perfect hits," problems solved cleanly and correctly, and then he chased his own record. A quiet boy who lets his work do the talking found something he could measure himself against, and he kept beating it, all the way to 125 perfect hits in a single class.

"Teaching him has been a wonderful journey. He is a quiet and thoughtful child, but his actions speak louder than words. Beyond academics, he has a vibrant personality. He loves basketball, American football, and swimming, and often shares his excitement by showing his LEGO creations, drawings, and even the snow outside after a fun day of playing.

One of his most admirable qualities is his challenger mindset. Through Cuemath, he learned to focus on continuous improvement. We would set goals together for the number of perfect hits in each class, and he constantly challenged himself to beat his own records. His determination eventually led him to achieve 125 perfect hits.

Being a child from a gifted program, he has always shown exceptional potential. His Gold Medal in the Olympiad and ranking among the top 20% in Pennsylvania reflect not only his academic abilities but also his resilience, curiosity, and growth mindset. As his teacher, I am incredibly proud of the confident learner he is becoming and look forward to witnessing many more of his achievements in the years ahead."

Those results came together in the MOEMS Math Olympiad, the Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools, a set of contests that reward careful, creative problem-solving over raw speed, exactly the kind Neil had been building class after class. The boy who measured himself in perfect hits had quietly turned that habit into a habit of winning.

"Neil loves Math from a very young age. After joining Cuemath, he looks forward to taking the Mathfit test and doing the puzzles. He is very fond of his teacher Mam Satabdi Khanna and enjoys every class. His teacher keeps him motivated and interested in each topic as we progress with the classes."

~ NEIL'S PARENT

The Gold Medal is the headline, but the habit beneath it is the real prize. Neil has learned that he can set a bar, clear it, and set it higher, a skill that will outlast any single contest. That is what being MathFit looks like in a Grade 5 student: a child who challenges himself and genuinely enjoys the climb. A drive like that is easiest to nurture early, while a child still thinks of math as a game worth winning.
